Lovers Key – Fishing


Trout, redfish, snook and tarpon are caught seasonally. Castnetting for mullet in the bay is a popular activity.

All fishing within the park must conform to regulations concerning size, number, method of capture and season. A fishing license may be required. More information is available at the Florida Wildlife Commission’s Fishing in Florida.

Shark fishing from the beach at Lovers Key/Carl E. Johnson State Park

With 1.2 million visitors using the beach for recreation including swimming, we no longer permit shark fishing during day light hours from the beach. You are welcome to use your after-hours permit to fish for sharks during the hours: 1 hour after sunset to sunrise. No person shall use chumming or blood baiting for sharks on the beach or within 1000 of the beach. All FWC rules regarding the catch and release of sharks will apply.

62d-20.14(1) Shark fishing is prohibited from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset from the beach.
